Christmas at Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington Christmas

These wreaths — some 5,000 — are donated by the Worcester Wreath Co. of Harrington, Maine . The owner, Merrill Worcester, not only provides the wreaths, but covers the trucking expense as well. He’s done this since 1992. A wonderful guy. Also, most years, groups of Maine school kids combine an educational trip to DC with this event to help out. Making this even more remarkable is the fact that Harrington is in one of the poorest parts of the state.

Merry Christmas Eve

Christmas_eveI hope everyone is ready for Christmas.  All those last minute shoppers, mainly men I presume, will be out and about today.  I went to Wally World yesterday and it was about as crowded as I’ve seen it, but I haven’t gotten out much this year.  The parking lot was pretty full, but the checkouts were good.  I had one person in front of me.

What little shopping I did was mostly online and that worked out well for me.

I did try to buy one item online that I couldn’t find locally.  I found it at Amazon.com for $34 (with free 2 day shipping) but they were out of stock.  One of their affiliates had it for $35 plus $8.95 shipping, but it wouldn’t be here until Dec. 27.  I opted for the 2 day shipping upgrade and when I got to the online shopping cart the shipping was going to be $65 making the total cost just over $100.  I canceled that order and checked a few more places online.  K-Mart had it on sale for $22.  An option was to pay for it and pick it up at a local K-Mart store.  Of course my closest one didn’t have it.  But it was available at one about 45 minutes away, so I ordered it and expected to hear that it was out of stock.  But an hour or so later they sent me an email that it was ready for pickup.  Of course I picked up some other stocking stuffers while I was there.  I noticed that they had this item on the shelf and it was $30, but I got it for $21 plus tax so it was $22 and some change.  I probably spent $7–8 on gas to get it but it beats $65 delivery charge.

We’re having family over this afternoon and evening.  Then tomorrow we’ll have even more family for dinner.  We’re not really going anywhere so it’ll be nice.

The only thing that would make it nicer would be to have the beautiful snow we had last Christmas Eve.
