Jif settles the Big Gif Debate

Jif is releasing a limited-edition jar of GIF peanut butter in a collaboration meant to be as smooth as the product itself.

The purpose is to “settle the great debate” over how to pronounce the looping image format that has overtaken in the internet, J.M. Smucker Company (SJM), the brand’s manufacturer, said in a press release.

Both GIF and the peanut butter are pronounced “Jif.”

  1. We should pay no attention to how the inventors of things say things.

Otherwise we will say leenerx instead of lienucks for Linux, and where would that get us?

Besides which, if you have a large quantity of peanut butter in your mouth you are certain to say things wrongly because one’s tongue sticks to the roof of the mouth.

GIF should be pronounced like “gift”, but without the “t”.

I’ll put that on a jar sometime when I get a moment.
