B&P Turns 17

Today, March 31, marks the 17th anniversary of the start of Bits & Pieces.  It was on this date in 2002 that I started B&P over on Blogger.  After a short while, we moved to a self-hosted WordPress blog.

It has been a major part of my life these last 17 years.  And I’m sure I wouldn’t still be doing it if it weren’t for the wonderful people that have come together as contributors, readers and especially commenters to make Bits & Pieces what I like to call our little worldwide neighborhood.

The number of daily visitors is down significantly from our heyday back in 2009-2010, but we still managed to get more than 2.4 million page views last year.  Having to pay for hosting and purchase more security utilities ($167 just the other day) to keep the site safe from hackers takes a toll on any advertising profits.  If you’d care to make a donation it would be greatly appreciated, and if you can’t that’s fine.

I still enjoy working on the site and interacting with the B&P community but I also sometimes think about scaling back the time spent on here every now and then.  I don’t think I’ll ever stop having a web presence like this but it would be nice to be able to step away every now and then and not feel guilty about doing so.

As I said earlier, you, the person reading this, are the reason this website exists and has existed for so long.  15 years is more than a lifetime, maybe two or three lifetimes, for many blogs.  I’m proud of what we have here and of the people who visit.  I’ve met many of you in person and have enjoyed doing so.  I’ve communicated with many, many more and almost all of those communications have been friendly, productive and satisfying.

Thanks to all who send me post suggestions whether it’s regularly or just every now and then, to those who just stop by and read, whether occasionally or every day and most importantly those who have left comments and become true neighbors and friends in our little worldwide neighborhood.  I’m humbled by your kindness and friendship.

Here’s to looking forward to 18!

  1. I’ve mostly been a lurker here, seldom commenting, but I’ve rarely missed a day in 15 or 16 years. I found Bits and Pieces on the J-Walk blog back in 2003 and have loved it since then. Thank you.

  2. I really enjoy this site, especially since you police it so well. I’ve been coming here since about 2010, having stumbled in from Miss Cellania. I also enjoy our get togethers where we can swap lies without any contradictions. One thing missing is I wish that “Whatisit?” would come back. No prizes would be necessary, just for fun.

  3. Jonco — I think your calculations are wrong – it can’t be 17 years — I don’t even admit to being that old! I guess time flies when your having fun. Keep up the good work – there are a lot of great memories going back, and still you’re able to produce (with the help of .. well now… Buster) a great website. Thanks for all you do to make this happen & Happy Anniversary!!! – J

  4. It’s safe to say that B&P has gotten me thru some pretty tough times over the past 10 or 12 years. Meeting so many B&Pers here, then on FB, and then many in person, has made memories of a lifetime. We shared family news, joys and sorrows, good times and bad. This is my second favorite family, right here.

  5. Goodness, now I feel as old as I look! I’ve been practically daily visitor for about 12 years..not commented a lot til lately. Here in Oz if we know someone is a genuine person, we say they are True Blue…Not difficult to tell you are True Blue, a family man, with a good heart. I will have a look to see how I can donate…

  6. B&P is one of a few bookmarks I have that are visited every day ! The content is best when politics is invisible.
Keep up the great work !

  7. I drop by almost every day for a looooooong time, I like B&P very much.
Wonderful job Jonco, keep it up 🙂

  8. Congrats! I come by here first every time I get on the computer for fun. I can’t believe it’s been that long. I’m not even sure how long I’ve been coming here, I ‘m guessing 2004 or 05 ish? I love it here.

  9. Thanks for 17 years of escape from the trials and tribulations of life. There are countless sites that I used to go to regularly, but B&P is the only one that I have been going to regularly since I discovered it so many years ago! Thanks Jonco for many years of joy!

  10. This is just a great place to spend time at when I’m spending time. You ought to be proud of yourself for making this what it is!

  11. Though I’m currently lurking I still check in at least once a day. Life isn’t complete without a little B&P. Here’s looking forward to the next 17 years!

  12. Congratulations, Jonco! You’ve been a daily, first stop, port-in-the-storm since 2009 (via MissC also)! Running a blog must be time consuming yet you never let the readers feel the toll. You run the friendliest, give-and-take, informative, and just plain fun site! Thank you!
