This 1933 recording by Tom Clarence Ashley & Gwen Foster is the oldest known recording of “House of the Rising Sun.”
I think I prefer the Animals’ version. … No, I’m SURE I prefer the Animals’ version.

I agree, but it is interesting to hear. I’ve always wondered if the singers on these old recordings really sounded that bad or if that was the actual style.

Ooops! I meant to say taste is subjective or somesuch thing.
Though I do wonder what people would say 100 or 200 years from now if asked to chose their fave between this and the Animals’ version. (Don’t get me wrong, I like the Animals’ version just fine. But are our great-great grandkids going to find the sorta yodel-y bits off putting, or are they gonna find Eric Burdon’s barking growl too weird and non-musical?)
