Seems like it was the early 70’s he started the Outlaw stuff and that’s when he gained success with that look. He’d had the suit and tie look back in the 60’s, but hits like the Red Headed Stranger and teaming up with Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristopherson, and others made them take off.
