  1. Now if they could make one that cleans toilets! In all seriousness, it does show how we take for granted the millions of calculations our brain has to make when we do the simplest tasks.

  2. You know, when I was a junior high student, my Dad bought us a computer to play with. Computer’s were basically toys back then. This was before Microsoft, Windows etc.

    This was our first computer:

2kb of ram. 3.25 mhz, no hard drive and no monitor. You hooked it up to the TV with WIRES because TVs didn’t have those convenient plugs in the back yet.

For perspective, my mac at home has 8gb of ram, a 1tb hard drive and runs at almost 3 ghz. Mind-blowing.

I tell my students that in the future, robots will such a daily part of our lives that we won’t even think about it. We can’t even imagine yet all the things robots will be used for because our vision NOW of what robots will be like 30 years from now, is probably not so different as our vision of what computers would be like in 1983: e.g. Wargames, Electric Dreams, Max Headroom. 30 years from now, we’ll look back at today with our Hollywood Terminators and C3p0s and so on, and we’ll alternately laugh and cringe at how naive our view was.
