This photo looks like he has done this to texture a 3D model for a game or a 3D modelling program like poser.
I did a similar thing to my own head a couple of years back just for photographic and photoshop practice using the technique that you would use to shoot a panorama but reversed.
Be warned – it’s not a pretty sight…
