Up through the 70’s Iowa was listed as second to Texas in the number of reported tornadoes. This was because Iowa has a population that is more evenly spread out across the state(every square mile had one or more farmsteads.) With the advent of Doppler radar all those tornadoes that were missed in sparsely settled areas are now counted. Although the numbers of reported tornadoes are up dramatically it would be helpful to strip out those reported by Doppler from those reported by people to get an accurate representation for comparison purposes.
It would be an interesting study to see that when shit happens, how many of those people that want to “Get government out of my life” vs. those that cry “The government isn’t doing enough for me”.
