October 2010 – Page 3 – Bits and Pieces

Charlie and Spike are two kittens with myotonia congenita, otherwise known as ‘fainting goat’ syndrome. at the slightest sound, the kittens respond by collapsing and falling into a rigid paralysis which lasts about a minute before they return to normal. This condition has hardly ever before been diagnosed in a cat, is rarely found in dogs and is more common in goats. The kittens are able to walk, but they cannot run or jump. Aside from this they are normal. Sad to report that the black and white kitten (Spike) died on 27th October from respiratory failure.

While going through some old pictures the other day I ran across these pictures I took on February 14, 1964. Then President Lyndon B. Johnson came into St. Louis and I went out to the airport to see what I could see.

My recollection was that we got to the airport a couple hours before he was scheduled to arrive. We saw people gathering by a fence near the main terminal. We could see increased security in the area. We joined the gathering and worked our way right up next to the fence which was about 5 or 6 feet high.

We saw our governor and senator and various other public officials awaiting the arrival as we were. The line of limousines and other vehicles were ready to take the President to his scheduled destination. I can’t remember the reason for his visit that day.

As Air Force One landed and taxied over to where we were all waiting the crowd was all abuzz.

The President stepped off the airplane and greeted dignitaries and then headed straight for the fence area where we were standing. He started shaking hands with those who came to greet him. I got to shake his hand as he moved down the fence. As he neared the end he turned around and headed back up the fence still shaking hands. I got my second handshake at that time. I also got this great close-up of his left ear.

What happened after that was unclear to me. I had just shook the hand of the President of the United States – TWICE! That was quite something for this 15 year old kid.
